Artist Statement
My work is based on industrial and functional forms. I explore how objects acquire meaning and how that meaning changes when form, function, and context are separated.
I use industrial and technical components, as well as other functional elements, as the starting point for ceramic sculptures. By isolating, enlarging and reinterpreting these forms in clay, they lose their original function and context. What remains are autonomous objects that suggest familiarity while resisting a fixed interpretation.
Through this process, the way these forms are perceived begins to shift. Functional and familiar elements are redefined as sculptural objects, in which their original logic is no longer the dominant logic.
Material plays an important role in this process. I work primarily with unglazed clay, where texture, colour and surface contribute to the way a form is experienced and interpreted.
My work explores how we perceive, recognise and interpret objects and how meaning does not lie in form alone, but emerges through the relationship between form, material and context.
Artist Statement
Mijn werk vertrekt vanuit industriële en functionele vormen, zoals technische componenten en andere functionele elementen, die ik als uitgangspunt gebruik voor mijn keramische sculpturen. Ik onderzoek hoe objecten betekenis krijgen en hoe die betekenis verandert wanneer vorm, functie en context van elkaar worden losgemaakt.
Door deze vormen te isoleren, uit te vergroten en opnieuw in klei te interpreteren, verliezen ze hun oorspronkelijke functie en vanzelfsprekendheid. Wat overblijft zijn autonome objecten die een zekere vertrouwdheid suggereren, maar zich verzetten tegen een vaste betekenis.
Door dit proces verschuift de manier waarop deze vormen worden waargenomen. Functionele en herkenbare elementen krijgen een nieuwe betekenis als sculpturale objecten, waarin hun oorspronkelijke logica niet langer leidend is.
Materiaal speelt een belangrijke rol in dit proces. Ik werk voornamelijk met ongeglazuurde klei, waarbij textuur, kleur en oppervlak bijdragen aan de manier waarop een vorm wordt ervaren en geïnterpreteerd.
Mijn werk onderzoekt hoe we objecten waarnemen, herkennen en interpreteren, en hoe betekenis niet alleen in de vorm zelf ligt, maar ontstaat vanuit de relatie tussen vorm, materiaal en context.

Regina Arissen is a ceramic artist based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. She studied photography at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht for three years before continuing independently. She later shifted her focus to ceramics and further developed her work through the Dutch Ceramic Education programme, complemented by additional years of study and specialised courses.
Over
Regina Arissen is keramisch kunstenaar en woont en werkt in Utrecht. Na drie jaar fotografie te hebben gestudeerd aan de HKU Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht, vervolgde ze haar ontwikkeling zelfstandig. Later verlegde ze haar focus naar keramiek. Binnen de Nederlandse Keramiekopleiding verdiepte ze haar kennis en praktijk verder, naast meerdere jaren aanvullende studie en gespecialiseerde cursussen.
